Seche Vite Dry fast Topcoat review

Hey all,

Today I have a review of the Seche Vite dry fast top coat. I won this sometime last year in a giveaway and I have come to the end of my bottle so I think it's time to tell ye what I think of it. Normally I stick with essence topcoats so this was a great change from those.

First up it really does dry quickly. Less than 30 seconds and it is touch dry, give it a minute and it is rock solid and ready to go. For me this was essential, especially when I was dong intricate nail art ie. Frankie Boyle. I didn't have to worry about smudging the design which took 4-5 hours to create. The finish was incredibly glossy and smoothed out any lumps and bumps. It's pretty amazing.

Then I started experiencing a lot of problems. First off if you get the topcoat around the skin of your nails it destroys them. Mine were constantly left peeling and they looked awful regardless of the treatments I used. Seche has a really strong chemically smell which doesn't bother me as much to be honest as long as I used it in a well ventilated room.

As I got about half-way through the bottle I noticed my nail polish would shrink and crack when I applied this. The neck day my manicure look shoody and ruined the look of any polish I had underneath.  Also at this point the topcoat itself went gloopy. I had to struggle with it to get it on my nails quickly and evenly. Even if I managed that I was always left with strings of topcoat all over my hands, desk and nails. Not great if you are just about top leave the house.

Now the biggest problem which I really urge ye to take head of is the chemical content. On the back of the bottle you will see a little bit of text in a really small print. This reads "This Product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects and other reproductive harm". Anything that could cause serious internal problems is not something I want to mess around with just for a glossy finish.

In all honesty, I would not recommend anyone use this topcoat and I really urge ye to think about switching if ye already have it. I believe a bottle costs around €10. Sorry to be a negative nelly with this post but I know some people aren't aware of the danger with this topcoat and I'd hate for anyone to buy it on my review without knowing about that. Plus the shrinking really does my head in!

    1. Oh no! I'm sure you'll go through them fairly quickly anyway so I wouldn't worry too much :)

  3. I'm glad I'm not the only one having these crazy problems with Seche vite. I'm only seen rave reviews about the top coat. And yeah, initially it makes things look great like you said, but then it's all down hill from there.

    1. I wish I'd known before I tried it. It's silly to spend so much on something that will barely last and ruins your skin and manicure.

  4. Both my bottles went gloopy and it shrinks all my manis - I only use it when I'm in a hurry.. I did NOT realise the chemical part so I think I'll be throwing it out! Which Essence top coat do you find the best?! :) Gx

    1. I can't believe the chemical part is so down played!! I haven't found an amazing Essence one so far. I have heard the better than gel nails top sealer is one of the best (I haven't found one yet) so I'd say give that a try if you want a quick drying one too :)

  5. I definitely won't be re purchasing this when its done, the chemical thing is awful and I too hate how it leaves my nails! My cuticles constantly look dry and damaged:/

  6. Awww...sad to know that its content is dangerous. I thought it was a good product to try out since I am looking for a quick drying top coat. Thanks for letting us know.

  7. Have y'all heard of Dazzle Dry? http://www.dazzledry.com/#features
It's a super fast drying polish that is fairly new to the market, I think you can only get it online. It boasts of being vegan & non-toxic, dries rock hard in 5min. I have a new bottle & I'm curious to know how long it will last, I will probably do a review after I've finished my bottle.

    1. They don't ship outside of the US so it's not good for me I'm afraid. Plus it's quiet a dear topcoat at $12.50 not including shipping. Thank you for the suggestion though :)

  8. There's a good link here about toluene: http://lacquerglamour.wordpress.com/2011/09/21/seche-vite-and-toluene-harmless-or-harmful/

Basically, it's harmless in the amounts that are present in nail products. Even in California (which is the only place that requires a warning to be put on items containing toluene), it's been classified as safe.

It's a shame you didn't get on with Seche Vite. I honestly think it's the best thing since sliced bread. Better than sliced bread! lol. I somehow seem to have escaped this shrinkage business that everyone else seems to get...happy days :)

    1. It's definitely not something I would repurchase based on the shrinking and hte damage it did to my cuticles. I miss the quick drying factor though :P

  9. Hi :)
You might want to consider this article about Seche Vite and the warning written on the bottles: http://lacquerglamour.wordpress.com/2011/09/21/seche-vite-and-toluene-harmless-or-harmful/

Many people are afraid of Seche Vite because of that warning, but depending on how you use your SV, it may not be as dangerous ...
I hope this will help you :)

    1. Thanks Gwenn :) Honestly it's the shrinking and the damage that really put me off. It has taken ages for my nails and skin to get back into shape after it.

  10. I paid a massive €14 for this in Dundrum and to be honest, I thought it was a bit meh! I'm only getting one day from a manicure before it chips.

I got another bottle in Salon Services for about €6, which is more reasonable.

    1. That is really expensive! €6 is far better. I'm looking at the Sally hansen insta dry which is around the same price. Hopefully it doesn't ruin my skin as much as Seche :/

  11. Would absolutely not ever use it even if it was €2, the chemical thing puts me way off - I love nail polish as much as the next person but jesus, birth defects?!?! NO!! Fair play for the honest review.
