Twinsie Tuesday- Something new

Hey all,

Today's theme is something new. I haven't used my magnetic polishes for a while and magnetic nail art is new for me so out they came! I went with a fairly simple design. Starting off with a coat of Flormar magnetic twist in MG03 (green), I applied the magnet directly after applying each coat. Then I left it to dry for a while before placing two bits of striping tape on each nail. Using the Flormar Magnetic twist in MG05 (red) I filled in the gap and put on the magnetic on each nail.

I added on a topcoat and that's all there is to it! It's a bit tedious but I like the effect and the colours look really nice beside each other.

Keeping it teal

Hey all,

Something I have shown on the blog but this time I have more accurate pictures :P This is the beautiful Barry M Teal. I don't think we got this in Ireland (at least not in any of the shops I've been in) I was incredibly lucky to have Polly Polish send this to me.

This is 2 coats of Teal. The formula is pretty great. It can be a bit streaky but it's easy to get rid of them. I added on a coat of Sally Hansen Insta-dri to seal it in. It didn't end up chipping the next day but I think Barry m polishes are fairly prone to chipping after a couple of days anyway. It's a gorgeous polish though and I think it's perfect for the Christmas season. It glows on the nail.

Zoinks!

Hey all,

One of my favourites nail polishes by far is Sinful Colors Sugar Rush. I love the way it looks on my nails and it suits my skintone/ I have worn it countless times this year. I thought it would make a nice base for Red Carpet Lacquer Zoinks! which I haven't used for a while.

I have on 2 coats of Sugar Rush and 1 coat of zoinks! on top of that again. Zoinks! is fairly jam-packed so it came out a bit unevenly on the nail. I'm not bothered though, I like a densely packed glitter so I can wear it on it's own.

Twinsie Tuesday- Something Old

Hey all,

This was one of the hard ones from the Twinsie Tuesday line-up. I went for an old collection instead on a old manicure. I have 2 polishes from OPI's On stranger tides collection. Opi Skull and glossbones and On Stranger tides. This collection was released in 2011 so it's not ancient but it's the best I could do :P

I have On Stranger tides as a base on all nails abar the ring finger which has Skull and Glossbones on it. Then I added on polka dots with the opposite colour.  I suppose Polka dots are an old tecnique so that counts too ;)

Festive glitter gradient

Hey all,

As much as  I like the look of China Glaze Electrify, I rarely use it. I knew it would make a nice festive mani though. Red and gold were made for each other and the fact that it's a glitter makes it even better. The sparkle from my nails is so distracting! I really like it.

I went with a nude base to show up the glitter. 2 coats of Essence Cookies and Cream from the Nude glam collection. The I added on a gradient using China Glaze Electrify.Sometimes it's the simplest of nails that have the most effect!

New Burt's Bees Blueberry & Dark Chocolate review

Hey all,

As ye can tell by the copious amount of lipbalm reviews I do, it's one of my most used products. I have terrible lips all year round so I have to have a lipbalm on me at all times. I have tried a tonne of brands but I have remained loyal to the EOS lipbalm for a good while. I received the new Burt's Bees lipbalm in the post a couple of weeks back and I decided to use this on it's own to see how well it worked. This is my first time trying a birt's bees product.

This is the Blueberry and dark chocolate version. I get more of the fruity scent on my lips but the chocolate is noticeable. I like it, it doesn't stay around for long and it isn't a hugely overpowering scent.  It glides on the lips beautifully. It seems to go on a bit better than my Strawberry sorbet lipbalm from EOS which requires a good few swipes to get a nice layer of lipbalm. One swipe from Burts Bees and I'm all set. It doesn't leave a sticky feeling on the lips and it seems to sink in nicely leaving my lips really soft.  It contains Blueberry seed oil, sweet cocoa powder and rich cocoa seed butter. I really like the fact that it's 100% natural and they don't test on animals. The only fault I have really is that the balm doesn't always twist back in the tube so I have to push it back in. I know when I'm in a hurry one day it's going to end up being squished into the lid which is not ideal.

I ended up usuing this pretty much religiously and I am flying through the tube. I will definitely be buying Burts Bees lipbalm when I need a new tube. I get why so many people rave about their products and I love that they have a good selection. You can get the Burts bees lipbalms in Boots for €4.59 and in Holland and Barrett for €4.69 (or two for €7.03)

A sweet talkin' sugar coated candy (wo)man

Hey all,

Something I haven't done before was Candy cane nails. I'm getting the hang of striping tape at long last so I can get my stripes looking fairly clean and almost identical on each nail. I started off with Sally Hansen Complete Salon manicure in Right Said fred. This is nice and bright and because it's part of the complete salon range I didn't have to bother with a basecoat to stop it from staining. It really reduced the amount of time I had to spend on my nails which is always good. Then I marked off my nails with small strips of striping tape and painted on a thin later of white polish. Right after putting on the white I used my cuticle nippers to pull off the stripes of tape.

That fecking hair on my ring finger is cotton wool! I didn't even notice it until I edited the pictures. That's awful annoying. Anyway I didn't use a topcoat because the one I have drags when used with the white polish. I really like the end result though, I may try it with green or gold instead of the white.

The Snowman

Hey all,

I swatched GOSH Silver the last day and I decided to add on a little snowy scene while I had the polish on. This is 2 coats of Gosh Silver. The white is from Born Pretty store. The black, red and orange on the snowman are plain old acrylic paints. I used my dotting tools for the snowman and the falling snow on my other nails. This was really quick and easy to do. I still haven't decided what kind of nails I'm going to do for the Christmas week. I'll probably just end up with a plain old polish with no nail art. When I plan something I always end up just going for the easy option in the end :P

Twinsie Tuesday- Something Blue

Hey all,

For Something Blue I decided to go with a Robin on a sky blue background. I'm trying to keep these as festive as possible :P The blue is Barry m Blueberry icecream and I used acrylic paint for the rest of the robin. For the rest of my nails I went for China Glaze Holly day ,2 coats. I didn't want to take away from the robin so I decided against adding more detail to the other nails. I love how glossy China Glaze polishes can be. This is without a top coat and they look so shiny.

Christmas gift guide- ooooh shiny!

Hey all,

Jewellery is the one thing that always ends up coming out of the drawer for Christmas. It's a special occasion so you are allowed to wear your best without feeling like you are dressed up a bit too much. If you are in need of some new pieces to spruce up your collection then look no further! I've gathered up some beauties to suit both high and slightly restricted budgets. I've stuck to online shops so ye all have the chance to pick some up if ye feel inclined. Links and prices will be included so ye don't have to go searching for information.

I only recently came across this site and I fell in love with their necklaces. Betty and Biddy are based in Dublin and have put a huge amount of effort into each piece, including the descriptions. They are very budget friendly but they look gorgeous and have a tonne of unique pieces that I haven't come across before.  They offer worldwide shipping. Orders from the UK and Ireland come with free shipping.

I am in love with this chain. I love all animals and this is just the perfect present for someone like me. This is called the Edna. It comes on a sterling silver chain 18 inches in length. I love how the chain slots through the bone itself so you don't have to worry about it breaking off and losing it. I am a worrier when it comes to things like that. It's adorable and it only costs €15.

Next we have Jemima which is a belt buckle bangle. The gold setting is beautiful and the silver sparkle will make any outfit come to life. I love the style, it suits both day and night looks and you can;t be without a bit of sparkle at Christmas! and sure for €15 you can't go wrong with this. If you are looking for something like this but the silver isn't really doing it for you then check out Myrtle.Same style, same price but with a textured black leather coating.

Finally we have Muriel. These beautiful drop earrings are so dainty looking but they will sparkle in the light. The orange rhinestone is a nice change and the bows on the top are the icing on the cake. Again for €15 these little earrings are an absolute steal.

A new to me brand is Willow and Clo. They seem to favour more delicate and dainty looking items. They are on the more expensive side compared to the others mentioned thus far. They also offer worldwide shipping via registered post. My favourite item from their stock is the Shoot for the moon opn circle necklace. It's so unusual and I really like the message engraved on it. It's nice that only the person wearing it will really know what the sound wave means. This necklace costs €125.

Jasper Jewellery is a brand I have mentioned before on the blog. They offer worldwide free shipping, free gift wrapping and they are great if you ever have a problem with anything. Just pop them an email and they will get back to you asap.  I really had to whittle down my selection from their site! They have a great selection to suit everyone's budget.

First let me mention some of their brooches. The Swarovski Crystal Ruby Bow Brooch is the perfect way of adding a bit of festive flair to your outfit no matter what you are wearing. I adore this ribbon. It has lovely detailing and the red ruby is perfect for the Christmas / Festive season. The swarovski elements will glitter in the light. So beautiful and eye-catching.  Priced at €75 you will get a tonne of wear out of this brooch both before and after Christmas. Versatility is key when buying jewellery pieces for the most part. You want something that you can wear all year round and be safe in the knowledge that it will be perfect for any special occasion.

Ok, this may not be suitable for all year long but it is gorgeous! The Swarovski Christmas Tree Brooch is just beautiful. I am in love with emerald green things (it's probably the Irish in me haha) The brooch just seems to glow which is something I look for in my nail polish as well as my jewellery ;) The 14 carat gold metalwork adds that extra bit of sparkle to the overall look. It's something that you will wow people with every Christmas.  The thing about brooches is, they are something you can pass down through generations. Rings and bracelets may need altering in order to fit but brooches fit everyone. You can wear them however you want, on whatever coat / jacket or cardigan you feel like putting it on.  It's just a lovely present to get or give to someone special. The Christmas Tree brooch costs €50

Just look at the Bear Pendant Gold Necklace! I want to squeeze its little cheeks it is so adorable! This is one of Jasper Jewellery's Christmas gift ideas for little girls. I know plenty of big girls that would love this too in fairness! For €26 how could you pass this little fella up. It would be a lovely stocking filler or if you bought a teddy to go along with it and put the chain on the teddy to make it extra special. It could be given to a young child and when they are older and not into cuddly toys as much they could wear the chain and still keep that connection and the memory of the person who gave the Teddy to them.

The Swarovski Crystal Geometric Platinum Pendant Necklace is perfect is you are looking for something that doesn't scream out for attention with it's design. The emerald swarovski element is all you need to finish off your outfit. Like most of the other items I mentioned on this guide it has a festive feel but it can just as easily be worn all year round. This necklace costs €40.

Finally I had to mention some pearls. They have long been indicative of glamour and will definitely be making an appearance over the holidays. The Long Drop Pearl Earrings are perfect for Christmas parties and any formal occasions you have coming up throughout the year. I like studs but I think these make more of a statement. For €34 these are very affordable.

And that is all of it! I could honestly go on and on but I think what I have mentioned will suffice ;) You may have noticed that all of the brands I have listed are Irish. There are 2 reasons for this. 1) I am Irish so I haven't a notion about small/ homemade jewellery businesses outside of Ireland and 2)Not only are you getting a gorgeous present for someone that you care for but you are also supporting local people.

Let me know which is your favourite below!

Pixy Shower Mousse-Coconut ice review

Hey all,

I have never heard of a shower mousse before. To be honest I expected it to be really light and fluffy meaning it would last maybe 3-4 showers and then be completely gone. The Pixy Shower Mousse arrived and although I was dubious I thought I would give it a fair go aka Don't knock it 'til you've tried it. I was proven completely wrong, Although it looks like there is not a lot of product you get a great lather out of the tiniest amount. It comes with a shower pouffe and all you do it give it a bit of a swirl in the mousse and away you go. The smell is nice and refreshing and I've used it in every shower I've had for the last 2 weeks and it looks like I haven't touched it at all. The only thing you have to be careful off A. It's in a glass jar (probably the cutest jar I own) so be careful where you leave it and B. If the mousse gets too much water in it, it'll turn to liquid so drain your pouffe well before you dip it in to the mousse. Other than that I think it's a great shower product. My skin feels so much better after using it. Pixy have a heap of other scents available in the shower mousse range. Each jar costs €12.95 for 300ml and they have free Irish delivery for Products over €10.

Turtle Power

Hey all,

The last of my Born Pretty Store reviews for now. I had requested the turtle stud for my Discworld nail art design but I had to go without it as it hadn't arrived in time :/ So I just used it for an accent nail in this manicure :)

I started with 2 coats of Nails inc Motcomb street with Nails inc St James for the accent nail. I stuck the glitter on while St James was still wet so it would get a better grip on the nail and prevent it from falling off too soon. Once that was dry I added on a gradient using the Limited Edition Barry M Silver Glitter from last year's (or the year before's) Christmas offer. I really like that silver glitter. I rarely use it but given the time of year I think it will get a lot more use in the coming weeks.

Christmas gift guide- Glitter Nail polish

Hey all,

I thought I would put together a small post on festive nail polish that would make the perfect gift for someone (i.e yourself :P ) this year. I've included both indie and regular brands and links to any swatches I have for each polish. I'll mention any dates for last orders for indie brands so you can buy them in time for Christmas.

1) Glitter Toppers

Precious Polish- Definitely one of the better Christmas collections released this year. "Not so Silent night" consists of 5 glitter nail polishes all set in a clear base. Not So Silent Night is a limited edition Christmas collection featuring five sparkling topcoats. Here are the names of each polish and Anita's description of each shade:

Candy Caned - A mix of red and white glitter
Frosty's Freezing - A mix of pastel blue, sapphire and white glitter
Jingle My Bells - A mix of red and gold glitter
Jolly Holly - A mix of red and green glitter
Kiss My Mistletoe - A mix of green and white glitter

Priced at €8 each and available hereLast orders will be taken on the 15th so make sure to place your order soon or you will be disappointed. If you are into nail polish and need a good glitter that will make you nails sparkle over the holiday you cannot go wrong with one of these. They will match any outfit and supporting small Irish brands is always a good thing to do, especially around Christmas ;)

2) Opaque glitters

Sally Hansen Complete Salon manicure in Gilded lily. I bought this last Christmas and I have used it so many times this year. It is a beautiful gold glitter, Opaque in 3 coats if you are careful and it lasts well on the nail. You can wear it alone of use it in a gradient for a hint of sparkle. I believe they cost €9.95 but they are often on sale for €6.95.

China Glaze have a huge selection of Christmas themed nail polish collections. My favourite polish is Glittering Garland. A beautiful dark green with glitters running through it. I used it for some Christmas nail art last year and I loved it. So much so that I am thinking of doing the same design this year. Non holiday polish that works perfectly for this time of year is Running in circles. It's a beautiful Emerald green, opaque in 2 coats and it makes the most beautiful pedicure polish. It sparkles all of the time! I really recommend picking this polish up if you haven't already.

If you aren't keen on full on glitter nails (or you hate the removal process) a shimmer is the perfect way to sparkle without going OTT. OPI's the Spy who loved me  is a gorgeous red shimmer. This is beautiful on, way nicer than my camera could show, and application is perfect. If red is not your thing, China Glaze Blue years eve will blow you away. It is such a gorgeous blue. Again application is great and it lasts for a good while on the nail without chipping. Finally we have NYC Prince Street €1.79. Although I am not the biggest purple lover, the shimmery beaut is a must have in my books. It glows on the nail and it suits any budget.

As you can see I tend to stick with the classic colours around this time of year. Obviously everyone is different but I think it's a nice way of being festive without having to wear your gaudiest Christmas jumper throughout the entire month :P

The prince stud and the storm

Hey all,

I am veering off the Christmas course this week in order to catch up on reviews. I have some Christmas designs prepared but they won't be up until next week I think. Part of the Born Pretty Store package I received included these studs. I don't often use studs/ sequins etc in my day-to-day nails. I like the way they look but they are not practical at all :P These studs are a lot thicker than you would think. I don't believe they would last long on my nails at all unless you applied them right after adding on your topcoat so they have a firm grip on the nail.

I started off with one coat of Sinful Colors Folly. For the accent nail I used Red Carpet Lacquer Buttercup. Then I cut some strips of striping tape, added them on to the nails and painted the gaps using Zoya Storm and NYC Prince Street on my accent nail. Then using a pen I applied the studs. I used a mixture of colours (you get 12 in a wheel) and then I applied a topcoa to my middle nail only. The reason for this was I felt the stud moving as I applied the topcoat and I knew they would all fall off if I messed with them anymore.

Twinsie Tuesday- Late Late Toy show nails 2013

Hey all,

The design for this weeks Twinsie Tuesday was borrowed from this years Late Late Toy Show. Ryan wore 2 Christmas items this year. The striped jacket in the musical number and the much anticipated Christmas jumper towards the middle of the show. This year Ryan went for the Nutcracker jumper from Funky Jumpers. I love the jumper. It looks really warm but €40 is way over my budget so I'm missing out this year.

On my index and pinky finger I have NYC Lexington yellow, NYC Park Avenue, Sally Hansen Complete Salon manicure Right Said Fred and BK nail polish in white. For the Middle and ring fingers I used NYC High line Green and Nail the bytch lick or ish bytch. The Nutcracker fella is done using acrylic paint.

The Christmas grinch

Hey all,

Yeh...It's a bit late isn't it? I had ordered these the first week of October and they just arrived. I am seriously disappointed with the length of time it took to get here.  I had plans for a whole series of Halloween nail designs but I had no time to do freehand  designs after waiting so long for these. The good news is the Born Pretty store plate QA26 is easy to use. The designs came out perfectly and I didn't have to re-do any nails for once.

The base is Essence Black is back. The silver is Sally Hansen Complete salon manicure Shoot the Moon and on the accent nail I used Catrice Goldfinger. I am really happy with the way this turned out. I'm not into Halloween but I do like the nail art designs that people come up with.
