Here piggy, piggy, piggy

Hey all,

A manicure without any striping tape for once! Even I needed a break from it at this point. Instead I went with my old favourite combination; polka dots and an accent nail. I picked out on of the Sally Hansen Miracle Gels in Pretty Piggy. I couldn't resist doing some nail art given the name of this polish! I have on 2 coats  of Pretty Piggy. The formula is pretty good. They are quite glossy on their own two which is great (although I've come to expect that kind of finish from Sally Hansen polishes. They are amazing)

On my other nails I have the Sally Hansen Miracle gel in Redgy. Just like Pretty Piggy I needed 2 coats for Redgy. I love these two colours together, I freehanded the pig face with a small paintbrush and Redgy, using a plain black polish and a white polish for the eyes and nostrils. I topped it off with a coat of the Miracle Gel topcoat which did make the design run a bit which was annoying. In person you don't notice it really but it still bugs me!

So much for my Happy Ending

Hey all,

Another striped manicure! I really went through a phase of using striping tape, even though it can be really frustrating to work with. I decided to mix a few different styles with this manicure. There was no real reason for this, I just thought they'd be interesting on the nail. I think it looks pretty good though.  The only annoying thing is the thickness thanks to all the glitter. It's not bad by any means but it is noticeable which kind of ruins it for me, especially on short nails.

I started with 2 coats of Essence Happy Ending, a hot pink creme with a pretty good formula. After striping off the nail I added on Essence Time for Romance. This was pretty thick as it is an older polish. It's still beautiful though. On the other nails I didn't bother with the striping. Instead I dotted on Happy ending in a typical polka dot pattern. On the ring finger I used Essence Hello Holo for a bit of sparkle. It is a pretty busy manicure!

Light and Dark nail art

Hey all,

This is another version of the striped manicure I showed ye last week or the week before. This time I decided to play around with some textured polishes to see how they would work with this type of design.

I started with a base of Catrice Raspberry fields forever. This looks red in the pictures but it really is a true raspberry creme. It's one of my favourite raspberry nail polishes. The formula is great! Two coats and you are good to go. Once that was dry I added on the striping tape.

On  top of Raspberry Fields Forever I added Barry m  Kingsland Road (Pink) and Station Road (yellow). The blue is Nails inc Motcomb street. The manicure came out fairly smooth despite having a mix of textured polishes in the mix. The only problem I had was in getting the lines to look crisp. The textured effect really does not work well with striping tape if you are looking for a perfectly straight line.

On the whole though I think it looks pretty ok!

Twinsie Tuesday- Mani orders

Hey all,

Today we have another "mani orders" theme for the Twinsie Tuesday group. My order came from a few people to make it a bit more interesting. In the end I was given OPI Every month is Oktoberfest, a white polish and Barry m Amethyst.

I started with a base of OPI Every month is Oktoberfest. This is 2 coats. The formula is pretty good! Sometimes I do need to add on another coat but it's a beautiful polish and it dries quickly so the extra coat isn't really all that big of a deal.

I striped off the ring finger and added on a plain white polish on the tip and 2 coats of Barry m Amethyst to the base. I think all three polishes work pretty well together. The fact that the Barry m polish is a clear base glitter really helps. It makes it so much easier to use alongside other polishes.

Hay Day nail art

Hey all,

I love Hay Day, it's such a fun little game. I started this manicure with 1 coat of Barry m Cyan Blue. I sponged on Barry m Blueberry Ice cream. Once that was dry I finished it off with another layer of white polish at the tips. I hate doing gradients at the best of times but it is a nightmare with blue polish! Thankfully clean up wasn't too horrific this time around.

For the chicken I kept the base plain with a coat of white polish. I freehanded the chicken using a small paintbrush. The red is Max Factor Red Passion and the orange is Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Tahitian Sunset. I love the expression on the chickens face!

Feeling Sleepy with Essence

Hey all,

A quick swatch for today. This is one of the older polishes I have. Sleepy is from the Essence Snow White Collection that was released the year before last. It's a light blue creme with a hint of shimmer but it doesn't really translate onto the nails. Nevertheless it's a nice, pretty polish. I have on 3 coats as it was a tad bit streaky.

Again I used the Essence Soft touch topcoat to seal it all in. I really like the end result. There's just somthing about matte toppers that make you nails look so eye-catching.

Twinsie Tuesday-The Discworld #37:Unseen Academicals

Hey all,

I am so pleased with this weeks Twinsie Tuesday challenge. When I first read the prompt I was like "ugh this is not going to be fun" but thankfully I kept with it. I don't have a typical favourite football team BUT at the last minute I thought of Terry Pratchett's book "Unseen Academicals" which is based on the Unseen University's football team.

I started with a base of Illamasqua Monogamous, 2 coats, on all of my nails except the middle finger. Then I striped off the nail and pained on Orly Liquid Vinyl. Again I striped off the nail and added on Max Factor Red Passion. On the middle nail I used a plain white polish. I striped it off to match the referee's shirt and painted on Orly Liquid Vinyl. I topped it off with Essence Soft Touch matte topcoat.

I really enjoyed doing this manicure I have to say. I love the Dicworld series so any chance I get to do a Discworld themed manicure makes me pretty happy.

Space Cadet

Hey all,

The other Orly nail polish I own is Space Cadet, a duochrome polish with a sheer grey-ish base. In the bottle this is amazing. You can really see the pink/gold shift. On the nail I wasn't won over by it. It's pretty sheer so I decided to layer it over Orly Liquid Vinyl. I decided it wasn't something I would like to wear as a full manicure so I did a curtain nail design seeing as its fairly quick and easy to do.

Here I have on 2 coats of Orly Liquid Vinyl, 2 coats of Space Cadet and 1 coat of Essence Soft Touch matte topcoat.

A stripe of luck

Hey all,

Some super short nail art for today. I started off with 2 coats of Nails inc Bluebell. Once that was fully dry (important when using striping tape!) I sectioned off the nail. I painted half of the nail using Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in "Plum Luck". On the other half of the nail I added Essence Nude it.

I have to say I really enjoy doing this design even though it takes a bit of patience. I have done a few of these now using all different colours but I really liked this one in particular. I'd say a Christmas version would be pretty unusual if you didn't want to go for the traditional Christmas manicure. I'll probably try one out if I remember.

Orly Liquid Vinyl review

Hey all,

I've been coming to the end of my bottle of Essence Black is back for a while and I decided it was time to try out a few other black polishes to see if any of them would fair better. I like the Essence one a lot but it seemed to get pretty bubbly towards the end which is a huge pain when you are trying to do nail art of even if you want a plain black manicure. Bubbles ruin everything! The first black I decided to try is Orly Liquid vinyl as it seems a lot of people rave about it as being a top black polish.

Here I have on 2 coats of Liquid Vinyl on its own. The formula is quite thin and it gets really patchy. It dries pretty quickly but the finish looks awful without a topcoat,as ye can see in the swatches above. It looks so scratched and crappy and that's just after painting my nails. It doesn't hold a candle to my Essence polish. Also something weird I noticed, after a few days of wear it seemed to thin out on my nails it looked like I had bald spots even though the day before that it was perfect! It's the strangest thing.  I wouldn't waste my money on this polish. It's not worth the money or the hassle with the formula and the finish.

Twinsie Tuesday- Least favourite polish

Hey all,

This weeks theme is to pick your least favourite polish at the moment. I picked out Catrice Captain Sparrows boat. This isn't a bad polish by any means. It photographs horribly too, it looks so much better in person. The brush strokes are magnified on camera which is a shame. It looks perfectly fine on the nail but out of all the other polishes I own, this is one of my least favourite at this very moment in time.

I have on 3 coats of Captain Sparrows boat. The formula is fine. It's a tad on the thin side so if you have longer nails you may as well throw on 3 coats or else there will be bald spots. It has a pretty blue sheen to it in certain lighting but mostly it's a gunmetal grey colour. I don't think I'll wear it as a full manicure at the moment but it might make a fun accent nail with a glitter topper. I'll have to play around with it and see.

Ruffled manicure attempt

Hey all,

This is my first go at a full on ruffled manicure. I'm not 100% happy with the results but it was grand for a first attempt. I made the mistake of trying to match the curve of my cuticle when in fact they should go in straight lines. Lesson learned!  Seeing as the autumn weather has started really coming in to its own I went with a suitable polish combination.

Using a dotting tool I added on Essence Nude it! ,the light nude polish, and Elf Smoky brown, the deep chocolate brown. I really like both polishes and I do think they look good together. It ended up looking slightly like a water-marbled manicure. I'll definitely try this manicure again. It was quite fun to try out but I would say you are better off going with 2 opaque polishes. Otherwise you'll be there forever trying to get each layer to the right opacity for it to show through at the end. I think you need strong colours to make this manicure work.

Pure and simple nails

Hey all,

Just a quick swatch for today's post. My nails have grown a fair bit in the past 2-3 weeks although I am tempted to cut them this short again. This is 3 coats of Ciate My Fair Lady. It's one of the nicest nude polishes I own. The formula is more of a crelly so it's a bit on the sheer side. You can get it opaque though just don't mess around whilst applying it.It can drag a bit so just use the 3 stroke method and you'll be grand. It's quite glossy on its own which is great but a topcoat is always worth adding on. You'll get far better wear out of it.

Twinsie Tuesday- Penguin nail art

Hey all,

For the minimalist theme we were given this week I thought I'd do some basic nail art on one nail, keeping all the other nails with just a plain polish.  All you really need for this manicure: a small brush , dotting tool and 3-4 polishes.

I started off with 3 coats of Orly Liquid Vinyl  on all of my nails. After giving that a while to dry I used white polish for the penguins stomach and eyes. Then using Nails inc Atomic I added on his feet and beak. For the ribbon on it's head I used Max Factor Red passion. I added on some beads I had from the Born Pretty store a while back. The bow ended up looking like those hats psychics wear which suits it but it wasn't really the look I was going for :)

I kept the plain nails glossy and added on a matte topcoat to the penguin. Matte topcoats make nail art far easier to see and they stand out far more than they would with a glossy topcoat. For nail art I think this qualifies as a minimalistic manicure.

Teal textured nail art

Hey all,

It would seem that teal nail polish is my thing this year. I love wearing it even though it can stain and leave your fingers looking a bit of a mess. Taking your time removing it helps though and it's well worth it. My favourite teal has to be NOPI Khloe had a little lam lam but Sally Hansen Complete Salon manicure in Blue Streak is up there amongst the best I have,  Even though it's a Complete Salon manicure polish I tend to use a basecoat with it. It leaves a tiny bit of staining behind and it's a paint to deal with so the extra step is worth it.

I thought I'd jazz it up a bit using a textured polish. I picked out Barry m Atlantic Road and added some stripes to my middle nail. The accent nail is 3 coats of Atlantic road.
