Sunset Fever

Hey all,

Another manicure using Sally Hansen Complete Salon manicure in Tahitian Sunset. This was supposed to be either a past Twinsie Tuesday post or a halloween post. I really like the end result so I thought it was worth a post.
I started off with a T shape on my nail using striping tape. I then painted each section using a plain white polish, Tahitian Sunset and Essence Black is back. Once that was one I pulled off the striping tape whilst the polish was still wet. To cover the nail the striping tape revealed I used Kiss nail art striper in Silver and Essence Gold Fever.
I topped it off with a coat of Essence Soft touch matte topcoat. Glitter with a matte topcoat is my favourite thing ever. Some glitters suit a glossy topcoat but others were made to be matte.

NOTD- Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure (372) Greige

Hey all,

I tend to turn to the Sally Hansen Complete Salon  Manicure range if I can't decide on what polish to wear. I love the brush and the formulas tend to be perfect. I hadn't worn greige as a full manicure in quite a while so I opted to pop that on.  I use this a fair bit in nail art but it is actually pretty nice on its own too.
I have 3 coats of Greige, no basecoat or topcoat. These polishes don't need a basecoat unless you are wearing one of the teal polishes (blue streak and Jungle gem for instance). They will stain your nails so I always use a basecoat before wearing one of them. You definitely do not need a topcoat. these are perfectly glossy on their own.
I mentioned before that this is not a greige really, it's just a light grey. There is not hint of beige in this whatsoever. It wears really well and I managed to get a full week out of this manicure with only a minor amount of tipwear.

Twinsie Tuesday- Pokemon!

Hey all,

This weeks Twinsie Tuesday manicure had to be inspired by a fandom we follow. I have a few books and films that I love but I've done manicures inspired by them before. This week I thought I'd go for an older show/game that I used to love. Pokemon was HUGE and I loved it. I found the series on netflix recently and I've watched pretty much every episode since then. I loved the original pokemon (pikachu, charmander, bulbasaur and squirtle) but for todays post I went with Pikachu.

I have 2 coats of NYC Pinstripe white as my base. I then divided the nail using Orly Vinyl. I added Max Factor Red passion to the top and that completled my Pokeballs, For my Pikachu accent I freehanded its head using OPI I just can't copeacabana. I used Orly Vinyl for the black on the ears, eyes, nose and mouth. The pink is OPI Kiss me I'm Brazillian.

Pond manicure....for real this time

Hey all,

I decided to try a "real" pond manicure this week. I only copped on last week that this was an actual technique. I still love my frog manicure but I thought I'd give the real thing a go (while I still remember what it is!)
The only proper jelly I have to hand is Zoya Paz so I went with an orange theme. I started with 3 coats of Sally Hansen Complete Salon manicure in Tahitian Sunset. On my accent nail Ihave 1 coat of Zoya Paz as a base. I freehanded the roses using China Glaze Flip Flop Fantasy, Essence Happy End and Nyc Picnic on the lawn for the leaves. I added a coat of Zoya Paz on top to complete the pond manicure look.

I have to admit the Pond manicure idea is not for me. The end result just doesn't look good on my nails and it's not something I would bother  to try again. It looks ok as an accent nail but I didn't like it as a full manicure at all.

New years eve nails 2014

Hey all,

My last manicure that I have left to show from my Christmas folder is actually my New Years eve manicure. I debated whether or not I would bother doing one this year but in the end I thought I might as well seeing as I had a bit of time to get them done. I generally keep my mani pretty basic using China Glaze Blue years eve. It's a bit of a tradition for me to wear this polish for New Years given the name. This year I thought I'd add a bit of glitter to the tips to make it stand out a bit more.
I have on 2 coats of Blue Years Eve over a basecoat of Sally Hansen miracle cure. Blue polish stains pretty badly so I always use a basecoat.

Whilst the second coat was still a bit tacky I stuck my nail into the gold glitter pot from the Miss Elegant touch Candy dip nail kit in Holly Berries (you can see my review of both kits here). Using a fan brush I gently brushed off the excess and it spread the glitter around into more of a gradient style rather than having just a clump of glitter in one spot. I topped it off with a coat of Sally Hansen miracle Gel topcoat.

Snowmen and candy canes

Hey all,

This was one of my favourite manicures this year. I did a similar candy cane design last year but this year I have a little snowman addition. I used the same green and red polishes for this design but I changed the lines and made them thinner.

My base is NYC Pinstripe white. I have on 2 coats. It could have done with a 3rd for sure but I knew it would be covered so I didn't bother. It wasn't worth the longer drying time.
The stripes are Barry m Red Glitter and China Glaze Running in Circles. I used roughly 2 coats for each.

For the snowman I used Sally Hansen Patent Gloss in Vinyl for all of the black parts. The orange is Nails inc Atomic. His little scarf is Barry m Blueberry. I topped it all off with Sally Hansen Miracle gel topcoat.

Twinsie Tuesday- Inspired by my shoes!

Hey all,

I forget what they call this design but it was the perfect pick for this weeks Twinsie Tuesday post. My shoes are pretty plain at the moment. They are just black flats, nothing special about them. They are easy to throw on in the morning so there's no faffing around with laces (and no chance I'll smudge or chip my nail polish in the process!)

Here I have on 2 coats of Illamasqua Monogamous. I refuse to buy these full price because it's ridiculous. I think they are something around the €17 mark in debenhams. Even though they have them on sale a fair bit, the ones on sale always sell out in an instant.
Once monogamous had dried I used Sally Hansen  Velveteen which has the same looking finish as my shoes so that worked out pretty well I have to say.
I think the mani turned out pretty spot on this week. I am pretty interested to see what the other ladies come up with.

Reindeer nail art

Hey all,

I am just getting around to posting the last few Christmas manicures I have. I really liked these and I know if I don't post them now they'll just get lost or deleted so I might as well throw them up here.
I think this is my first time doing freehand reindeer nail art.

I started with 2 coats of Sally Hansen Patent Gloss in Chic on my ring finger. On the other nails I used 2 coats of Gosh Silver. Once that was dry I freehanded the reindeer heads using Barry m Mushroom. I just used the barry m brush for this. For the antlers I used Elf Smoky brown,
The black noses are Zoya Storm. Barry m Red glitter is the red nose on the accent nail.

Finally I used a plain old white polish and Essence Black is Back for the black dot.I sealed it all in using Sally Hansen Miracle gel topcoat.

Favourite Books of 2014

Hey all,

This is my top 10 best reads of 2014. I have to say though, some of these are the best books I have read to date, not just in 2014. It wasn't an amazing year for books (having failed my goodreads challenge miserably, especially compared to 2013) but it was a pretty good year for finding new authors for me personally. Like my other lists, this is in no particular order.

1) The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith

This mystery/detective book was released in 2013 but I held off from reading it. I feel like the reviews in the beginning were fairly biased once people found out that it was actually a J.K Rowling book. In the end I gave in and I am delighted I gave it a chance. It is such an amazing book. Cormoran Strike is a great character and I cannot wait for the future releases in this series. It is going to be made into a tv series which is very exciting. I have done a full review on the book here.

2) Look back in hunger by Jo Brand

After picking this up on a whim I was pretty shocked at how much I enjoyed reading "Look back in hunger", the memoirs of the Comedian Jo Brand. She is not one of my favourite comedians but I like her enough to buy her books. Again this wasn't released during the year but way back in 2010. It was a great read and I have a full review on the book here.

3) The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown

I've been a fan of Dan Brown since he released The Da Vinci Code in 2003. I have all of his work and I must say The lost Symbol is by far one of his best to date. It's another mystery/detective which I tend to go for. It's well written and it keeps you guessing throughout. My full review can be found here.

4) Triptych by Karin Slaughter

One of the new to me authors of the year is Karin Slaughter. Although I initially read book number 5 or 6 in the Will Trent series it was definitely Triptych that got me hooked. If you like thrillers then I highly suggest picking this up. Slaughter is incredible at creating atmosphere, stirring up emotions and geniely shocking you. This was released in 2006 so there are quite a few more in this series to keep you reading for the next white at least.I have a full review of the book here.

5) How to fall in love by Cecelia Ahern

Cecelia Ahern is one of the very few Irish authors I really enjoy. I buy all of her books and she releases a new one pretty much every year which is great. She writes books that tend to be classed as chick lit or romance. All I know is that I always enjoy reading her works and the covers tend to be beautiful (I know that has nothing to do with the content but it's always a nice edition). How to fall in love was a lovely read. I have a short review here.

6) Diggers by Terry Pratchett

Another series I really enjoyed concerns the nomes and their attempts to get home. The book I have contains all 3 in the series but the second story in the Bromeliad trilogy by Terry Pratchett is the  one I'm focusing on here. It was such an improvement on the story. It was funny, smart and overall just a well told story. I would say you are better off reading all 3 tales otherwise the story won't make as much sense but if you are iffy with the first story trust me, the last 2 definitely make up for its shortcomings.

7) Entirely up to you, Darling by Richard Attenborough

Richard Attenborough will always be the best Santa Claus in my books (despite completely washing over this film in the biography). He starred in the remake of Miracle on 34th Street and I absolutely loved him. He was such a pleasant character and the book reflects this. One of the best biographies I've read so far. I learned a lot from this book and I am glad I have it in my collection. Full review here.

8) Fantastic beasts and where to find them by J.K Rowling

9The tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K Rowling

I am a huge Harry potter fan and I had to get my hands on the 3 books in this series. I really enjoyed both Fantastic Beasts and where to find them and The Tales of Beedle the Bard. (Quidditch through the ages was good but these were just that bit better resulting in both making the list) The detail they went into would almost lead you to believe that these creatures were real. I think they are a must read for fans of the books. A nice light and easy read but enjoyable non-the-less.

10) Stardust by Neil Gaiman

On my quest to find new authors I thought it was high time that I tried Neil Gaiman's work. So far it has been bit hit and miss but Stardust is just sensational. I loved this story. It was well written and I thought the characters were just perfect. I have seen the movie adaption and I thought it was great, it's one of my favourite films.  If you want to read a Gaiman book and you're not sure where to start you can't go wrong with Stardust.

So that's my top 10.Let me know what your favourite books were from the year or your favourite author. I've already started a list of books that I want to read for the year so hopefully I'll fair better than last time.

Nail art favourites of 2014

Hey all,

I decided to compile another list of favourites but this time it is focused on my favourite nail art designs that I managed to do last year. This was a lot harder than my favourite nail polishes. It is really nice to look back over all the nail art posts I did last. I had forgotten half of the designs so it was lovely to see them again. These are not in any particular order and there are links in the title to the original post if you want to know the polishes used etc. Here is the link to my Nail art favourites of 2013.

One of the first attempts of nail art this year based on one of my favourite books. The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith was amazing and I ended up doing a Book Look and review on it here.
The cover of the book is just beautiful and it made for a pretty interesting nail art design I think.

This look was from an earlier Twinsie Tuesday challenge (from way back in April) and I loved it. Green is a favourite colour of mine anyway and I think they just popped over the neutral base. The accent nail is my favourite.

Another of the Book Looks that I really enjoyed doing was for The Graveyard book by Neil Gaiman. Although the book was a tad disappointing I'm really happy with the way the nail art turned out. Again I really liked the cover of this book so it was interesting to try and recreate it (in my own way).

I couldn't go through the year without doing some minion inspired nail art! I really wanted to include Gru in this and I love the way it turned out. It was a bit different from the usual minion nails you see and I am so pleased with Gru.

This one was hard! I remember how long this took and I really thought I would just stop and do something different. This was for a Twinsie Tuesday post and I was asked to do a Finding nemo inspired nail look. I can't tell you how glad I am I kept with this design!

One of my favourite Game series' came to an end last year. Professor Layton is such a clever game and it was a challenge at times! Layton is my favourite character and I'm happy I kept him as an accent nail. I think it looks like a scene from the game.

One of the handful of successful gradients I have managed to do. I really liked this manicure and although I'm not a huge fan of 3d things on my nails I think the studs added something to the end result.

Even though Emmett ending up a bit smudged I am still pretty pleased with this manicure. I haven't seen the movie yet but I have seen the game based on the film and it was brilliant. I love the character Benny but Wildstyle is my favourite when it came to the nails.

Another Twinsie Tuesday manicure that was inspired by Inspired by Someone. This resulted in a manicure based on "How to fall in love" by Cecelia Ahern. It's simple but I really like how it turned out.

Another simple manicure. This was not planned and I think it turned out really well. I like the mix of colours and finishes a lot. I don't really plan my manicures anyway so it's nice when you do a look that you really like just by pure luck.

That's it! I just noticed that all of my favourites were done on short nails. It is so much harder to do nail art on shorties but obviously it can be done!
Let me know you favourite post below. I'd love to know which one you liked whether it featured in my favourites post or not.

Twinsie Tuesday- Pond manicure

Hey all,

The first Twinsie Tuesday post of the new year and we have 3 new Twinsies join the group. All of their links are down below so please check them out if you have a chance.

This weeks theme is Pond manicure. I decent to freehand a little frog face on my ring finger. I started with 2 coats of China Glaze I'm with the lifeguard. Once that was dry I painted on the face using NYC High line green. They look very similar in the pictures but in real life you can easily tell it's 2 different colours. The black is Essence Black is back and the light pink is 17 Sweet Kisses.

For the rest of my mani I went with 2 coats of Barry m Blueberry ice cream as a base. I then dotted on Barry m Cyan Blue, Catrice Sold out forever and NYC Hudson Breeze. I didn't use a topcoat on these nails but I did add a coat of Essence Soft touch matte topcoat to the accent nail. I find the design stands out more with a matte topper.

Top polishes of 2014

Hey all,

This is the third year I have compiled a list of my favourite polishes from the year and I have to say it has been a hard task to get a list this year. Overall it was a pretty poor nail polish year for me. Nothing really stood out as special and the few polishes that looked beautiful were dragged down through having an awful formula/ price / drying time with some having a combination of all three. I did manage to pick out 10 polishes that got a whole lot of use last year and ones that I just enjoyed wearing. If you are interesting to my picks from previous years here are the links for my 2012 post and my 2013 post

This won't come as a surprise to anyone that has been reading my blog for the last while. NOPI Khloe had a little lam lam is one of the best polishes I have. The formula is great and the colour is just perfect for me. It's such a sophisticated polish. I wore this at least 5-6 times as a full manicure on it's own not to mention the countless times it featured in a nail art design.

Another polish I don't think anyone will be surprised to see is Misa Bourbon on the rocks. Again I  wore this a tonne on its own as well as it nail art designs. It's such a beautiful polish. The shimmer really shines through and the formula is great.

One of the surprise favourites for me was Catrice Plumdog Millionaire. I do quite like textured polishes but the colours are generally pretty plain or they need a tonne of coats. Plumdog millionaire is a 3 coater but the blue and pink glitters are just beautiful, especially with a topcoat. It's not a super gritty texture either which I know bothers some people (I'm happy out either way if I'm honest). I'm very happy I picked this one up.

Colors by llarowe smooth Criminal is a beautiful purple holographic polish. It has a great formula and it lasts well on the nail. I really enjoyed wearing this polish, especially in sunnier weather when the holographic side really shines through.

This combination really surprised me. They are 2 polishes I don't really rate on their own but together they look phenomenal. Using Zoya Beatrix as a base and topping it off with China Glaze Electrify you get such a beautiful look. The different glitters all combine and they make your nails glow. I loved this manicure.

This polish was made for a white base. I've tried it over so many different polishes but in the end it always goes back to white. The various different coloured glitters really come to life over a white base. This is one I didn't want to take off and it really got me into glitter manicures which I ended up wearing a lot towards the end of the year.

A long term favourite of mine. I went through almost an entire month wearing this polish alone. It's more the colour than the formula if I am honest. It is a 3 coater and the more coats you put the longer it takes to dry. If I'm not in a hurry then I will definitely go for this polish. It wears pretty well without much chipping or tipwear (obviously that depends on the base and topcoat you use alongside the polish) It's such a pretty polish though and one I would repurchase when my bottle runs out if I cannot find a similar one from a different brand with a better formula.

Vinyl is the best black nail polish I have tried to date. It is so glossy (far nicer in person than it looks in the pictures) and the formula is perfect! I love the Sally Hansen brand and I tend to reach for them a lot. It's a shame this was a Limited Edition polish (I'm not sure if this polish is still available).

A very pretty coral from the Born Pretty Store holographics. It's one of the more unique colours for a holographic polish. The formula is good and although it doesn't have an intense holographic side it is very nice.

The colour isn't 100% accurate here but Sally Hansen's blue Streak was a beautiful polish released over here this year. I really started to love teal polishes and this leans more on the blue side than the other polishes I have. I love the colour, it has a great formula and as it's from the Complete salon manicure line the polish is so glossy on its own.

That's it! Overall this year there wasa definite purple theme. I normally hate purple but this year it was my most reached for nail polish colour. Having looked back over the previous years post there are a good few changes  but always a few constant favourites. I still use Catrice Have an Ice day religiously but it was time to change it up and show ye some of my newer favourites.

I'll be posting my nail art favourites and my Book favourites later on this week. Let me know your favourites below! I've been reading a few posts from other bloggers and it's interesting to see how different everyone is.
