Water Colour nails

Hey all

Not your traditional water colour nails. I decided to go with "the colour of water" inspired nails. What I thought of was the way the sea sparkles when the sun hits it. It's a mix of colours with blue/ teal shining through the most.

I used Essence the gel nail polish in 25 Prince charming as my base. This is a turquoise with blue/green shimmer. On top of that I added a coat of L.A Colors Color craze 653 which is a blue tinted base with green and teal glitters. I used this over Sinful Colors Rise and Shine before and I think it looks better but seeing as I was adding on so much glitter I didn't see the point in changing it.

Finally I added a coat of Essence nail art special effect topper in 10 glorious aquarius and a topcoat which made the job of this mani. Glorious Aquarius has a sprinkle of small hologrpahic glitter in it so it sparkled beautifully. I wasn't loving it before this step but after it was really transformed.  These pictures were taken at night so ignore the redness of my skin. That is all the cameras fault!

Twinsie Tuesday- Grey and Gold

Hey all

Grey and Gold is the theme for this week. I think the colours go incredibly well together so I was really pleased to see this as one of the challenges.

I started off with 2 coats of OPI Skull and Glossbones. Once that was dry I striped off the middle section and added a thicker coat of Essence the gel nail 53 Rock my World. I topped that off with Essence Merry Berry in 01 I <3 My golden pumps.

Once I removed the striping tape the lines looked a bit dodgy so I filled the edges in with Essence the gel nail polish in 51 miss captain. Finally I added on Sally Hansen 3D gel shine to add a bit of gloss to it.

I think it turned out ok. It wasn't what I had in mind but I like the colours together and I think the teal pop of Miss captain really added to it. Check out the other Twinsie Tuesday posts down below.

Orly Grape Neon

Hey all

Orly Grape Neon is one of the few polishes that gets a tonne of comments when I wear it. I'm not a huge fan of Orly mainly due to the price. I have only tried 3 of their polishes and Grape neon is the only one that I actually like and would probably repurchase.

Grape neon is a bright orchid-y purple. It's not a neon but it's just as striking. The formula is brilliant, 2 coats and you're good to go. First coat can be a bit sheer but it's perfect on the second. It dries quickly and it does have a glossy finish but I always topcoat it. Grape neon wears really well too. I get at least 5 days out of it with a small amount of tipwear but zero chips.

Not only is the colour beautiful but it's so easy to apply that I keep it aside as a quick "go-to" polish. If I need to change my manicure last minute and I don't know what to pick I'll go and get one from that section. I only have a handful of polishes in this area so it says a lot when I add a polish to that list!

Border nail art

Hey all

This weeks theme for A Weekly Dose of Rainbows group is Dots. I thought about doing  my usual polka dot design but I only had 2 colours to hand so this is what I came up with.

I thought the colours might be a bit too similar to show up on my nails but thankfully they stand out just enough. For the base I used Essence the gel nail polish in 51 Miss Captain. I used 2 coats but you can get away with one thick one. Once that had dried I used one of the smallest dotting tools to add the border to each nail. The polish I used for that is NYC Blue Sky.

Blue Sky brightens this up just enough without completely washing out Miss Captain. The dots make my nails look far longer and more round at the top which I really like.

Twinsie Tuesday- Shattered Glass

Hey all

This week were are doing Shattered glass inspired nails. I failed big time with this challenge but I didn't have time to do another one :(

I started with Sally Hansen Patent Gloss in Vinyl. Then I sponged on Essence the gel nail polish in 53 Rock my world but only on the tips. I used a plain white polish to outline the the nail to make it look like a shattered window.

You can see the white I used is pretty crap and ended up soaking up the colour beneath. It just didn't work in the way I had imagined it would which is a shame. It was fun to try and do a manicure based on shattered glass though. I know there is a nail art technique called shattered glass but it seemed to require glitter which I don't have.

I'm sure the other Twinsies have far better manicures to show for this weeks challenge (all linked down below)

Best of 2015- Nail art

Hey all,

Time for some nail art favourites from 2015! This is usually the easiest post to do as the nail art manicures stand out more than nail polish on its own. Just like my Best of 2015 Nail polish post I've also done similar posts in 2012, 2013 and 2014 so you can click on the links and give them a read if you haven't seen them before or just want a refresher.

I love the Minions so I included them in a fair few of my manicures in 2015.  This manicure is from February and it was part of a Twinsie Tuesday Challenge. I loved wearing this one and it matched the theme really well. It was my first attempt at a purple minion and it worked!

One of the brightest nail art manicures I wore last year that I loved was another Twinsie Tuesday challenge. It wasn't all that hard to do and I think it really stood out. I loved doing this manicure and it lasted for a good week without chips.

I'm starting to see a theme here :P Another Twinsie Tuesday post and a pretty frequent visitor on my blog. I love Mario so I'm not surprised to see him feature a couple of times this year. I'm actually going to include 2 here to save time.

The other one is pretty much the same but I love Yoshi on my thumb so I had to include it. It also includes one of my top polishes from 2015 :)

This manicure had an insane amount of comments on it IRL which was interesting. I wore this for an entire week so it was worth the crazy amount of time it took to get it right. I loved the original Chipmunks when I was young so it was a fun manicure for me to try and recreate.

Polka dots are my go-to nail design and mixing them with neons just looks so incredible. One of the easiest things in the world to do but it looks like you spent hours doing it. The black velvet base is the only way to go with this manicure. It made it so striking to look at.

A combination of Terry Pratchett's Discworld and some nail art? Sure how could you go wrong! Not only is Mort one of my favourite books (DEATH is my all time favourite Character from the Discworld) but I was thrilled with the end result of this manicure. It wasn't too complicated and it matched the style of the book which is always important.

Hotel Transylvania 2

I still haven't seen the movie but I had to do a manicure based on Hotel Transylvania 2. I managed to get the characters to look fairly close to the ones in the film. I love the colours and I just really enjoyed doing this design on my nails.

Christmas nail art

Christmas nail art is my absolute favourite thing to wear and I wore this one to death. I did do an *improved* version of this that I wore over Christmas but seeing as this was my first attempt I think it deserved to be mentioned here. The penguin is my favourite thing ever.

Celestial Rainbow

This isn't my typical style of manicure but I really loved it. I'm not sure if it was the mix of purples or the holographic glitter on top. Either way I'm so happy with it. I mentioned it in my original post but this looked so much better in real life, the camera just doesn't work with me sometimes!

Twinsie Tuesday: Pokemon- Squirtle

Squirtle is my last pick for the favourites list. It was a pretty simple manicure but it got the point across and I love his little face. I'm glad I kept it as an accent nail. Even on short nails this worked out well!

Twinsie Tuesday- Words

Hey all

I missed last weeks Twinsie Tuesday but I'll have that up maybe next week? Hopefully anyway. This week we were inspired by words for our manicure. This should be an interesting one!

I thought about doing some song lyrics for this post but I wasn't sure how long it would take me. In the end I thought this would be a bit more fun and it didn't take much time at all to do.

The Microsoft Word logo was obviously my inspiration for this post. I applied Barry m Cyan Blue to all of my nails. This tends to need a second coat but one was pretty good and covered my nail line. Then I used a plain white polish to do the logo on my accent nail.
I topped it all off with a matte topcoat so it would look a bit more crisp and that's it!

Best of 2015: Nail polish

Hey all

Time for a round up of 10 nail polishes that I loved during the year of 2015. I like to keep a list of these every year to look back on and see how much it changes. I have done this post several times over the past few years so you can check them out here : 2012,  2013,  2014 . I'm going to check out each post after to see what polishes I still have/love from the lists.

Barry m Silk Collection- Orchid

I started to get into Purple polishes a bit more this year and this is definitely my favourite out of them all. Even though it is a 3 coater (pretty typical with this brand) the colour is so unique that it's worth it. It dries matte and it looks crap but add on a topcoat and the shimmer just appears out of nowhere and it looks unreal.

Essence I <3 Trends- So lucky

An unexpected favourite from the Summer this year is So Lucky. This is a pastel seafoam green with a light holographic shimmer. This is a 3 coater for me as I prefer to do thin layers. Like the previous polish this dries matte but looks better with a glossy topcoat on top. It does look pretty matte though.

Essence the gel nail polish- Love is in the air

The Gel nail polish line from Essence was the stand out from this year. I have a few favourites from this line including Love is in the air. This is the best yellow polish I have ever tried. Love is in the air is a beautiful pastel/ banana yellow. This is 3 coats and I think it is perfect. The colour doesn't really suit my skin but I wear it none the less. It's great for nail art too!

Essence the gel nail polish- Play with my mint

Another beauty from the same range is Play with my mint. This colour is unreal and the formula is perfect. I have on 2 coats. I used this a lot in nail art because the colour is so bright and it applies so easily. It's a great spring/summer colour but really it works all year round as it doesn't wash out my skintone.

NYC Quick Dry- Blue Sky

Very similar to Play with my mint but it deserves a mention none-the-less. The formula again was really good. This is 2 coats and it dried nice and quick. I'm not sure how long this polish has been around but it is beautiful and I'm surprised I hadn't seen it before now. Blue Sky is darker and more of a turquoise compared to Play with my mint.

Orly Colour Blast- Grape Neon

This was a huge surprise favourite for me this year. Orly are seriously over-priced here at around €12.95 in boots so I don't buy them. This polish came free with a magazine so it only really cost around €6 which is an absolute steal. It's hard to capture the colour on camera but it is another
orchid-y purple and it is amazing! It's bright but not neon, it has a great formula and I got a week of wear without a single chip.

Essence Merry Berry- I <3 my Golden Pumps

I love gold toppers so the minute I heard this was coming out I went on the hunt for it. It took a good 3 weeks to find it but it was worth the effort. This is a gold shredded glitter topper in a clear base. Once coat is all you need and it looks so pretty. The gold stands out on your nail unlike other gold toppers I have tried which is more my style.

Sally Hansen Miracle Gel- Electra Cute

It wouldn't be a "favourite" list without Sally Hansen on it. This year I used them pretty much every week in some form or other. Electra-Cute was one of the stand outs for me. I don't own many oranges even though I do like the colour a lot. I used this polish so much in nail art that it had to be included. Great formula and a beautiful bright colour.

Barry m Christmas Limited Edition 2014 Starlight

Starlight was a polish I used an awful lot last year without really realising it. I love glitter polishes but I usually stick to hex glitters but I love the star glitter in this polish. The holographic glitters are amazing and something I would always pick over a plain glitter. The formula is a little thick but it is easy to apply and work with. I have Starlight on my ring finger in the picture above. I used this in a lot of my nail art manicures if I was unsure of what to do on the nail.

And that is it! Let me know down below what your favurite polishes of the year were. Most of my polishes were new in 2015 which is unusual for me. Essence was definitely the stand out brand with the release of the gel line but we'll see how they fair out in 2016. Hopefully they'll have a good Spring/ Summer collection release and more glitters!

Sponging on a rainbow

Hey all

Bit of an extended break after some internet issues but I am finally back posting. I have a Twinsie Tuesday post to get up but first is my A Weekly Dose of Rainbows manicure.

The theme was a bit odd but interesting. We had to do an "angry rainbow" meaning a design we don't particularly like but in a rainbow style to make it more appealing. I went with a sponged manicure for this one.

I started off with Sally Hansen Patent Gloss in Chic. Then using a tissue I dabbed on Essence 27 Don't be Shy (lime green), 48 My Love Diary (marsala) and Sinful Colors Sugar Rush (light blue) .
On my accent nail I added on a coat of Essence 43 Girl's best friend which never shows up as nice on camera as it does in person. It's a clear base with silver hex glitter and golden shimmer running though it. It's beautiful but you really have to see it in person.

I topped it off with SOSU quick dry topcoat which really doesn't work with nail art. It's too thin and left the manicure looking bumpy still. Best keep it for plain manicures.

Despite using really bright polishes the dabbing method kind of washed them out so it looked really pale on me. It might be better suited for the summer weather but I like the way it looks. I regret not using a white base as I think it would have made everything pop a lot more, especially the glitter.
